Dear Indian Government, ICMR, Activists, NGO’s & Foreign Press, STOP TRYING TO SAVE INDIAN WOMEN FROM THEMSELVES!!!!

Dear Indian Government, ICMR, Activists, NGO’s & Foreign Press,
STOP TRYING TO SAVE INDIAN WOMEN FROM THEMSELVES!!!!

Recently, a friend of mine quoted her mother who grew up in extreme poverty in Portugal: “Wealthy people are always telling poor people how they CAN’T make money.”

This incredibly sage pearl of wisdom made me think of how Indian Surrogate mothers have recently been slammed, persecuted, shamed, pushed down and silenced by people who are trying to swoop in and save them. But what exactly are these self-proclaimed superheroes trying to save Indian surrogates from?

Despite the demeaning way media outlets depict Indian women, surrogates in India are not frail, stupid, illiterate, incompetent underdogs who need activists to speak on their behalf. Indian surrogates are strong, wise, compassionate, intelligent and poised. They own their bodies. They are making decisions pertaining to their own bodies and lives for the first time in India’s patriarchal history. Surrogacy empowers Indian women to lead their families out of crisis, poverty and other challenges. The compensation they receive can finance the education of their children, start a lucrative business or build a decent home for their own families.

I find it reviling when activists talk about Indian surrogacy, pronouncing the word money like it is a filthy word they are gagging on. It is easy for privileged people to trivialize the surrogates’ compensation because to us, money is easily accessible and even dispensable. But to an Indian surrogate mother, money can be life changing. We are not talking about mere dollar bills here. Within the context of Indian surrogacy, money = life. Money = education. Money = opportunity. Money = home. Money = a child’s future. Money = hope. Money = freedom. You see, it is not the money itself, but what the money represents. If activists had their way, they would be denying Indian women the option to have financial independence.

Surrogacy is a job. It is not prostitution. It is not a baby market. The job description is simple: to care and nurture another’s child, giving them a safe place to grow. This kind of work is respectable and noble. Surrogacy may not be a job most Westerners would choose, or even a wealthy, Indian government official.

It seems that any job that involves nurturing is looked down upon. Consider how even teachers and nurses are treated by society. Surrogacy is a good, honest job that can provide for a family. Women in poor countries work hard. They always have and they always will. However, the trend among activists is to try to stop women in poor countries from performing difficult tasks. If a job is physically challenging, the job is labelled as exploitive, even if the work is a blessing to a family. This is both condescending and destructive. All women have a right to work in whatever capacity they choose. Never underestimate what an Indian woman can achieve.

The government of India has recently proposed a ban on surrogacy. What fascinates me about this proposal is that the Indian Government is claiming to be concerned about women being exploited. And yet, their plan to protect women from being exploited is to take away their basic human rights. The media and the government alike have been quite proactive in preventing Indian surrogates from speaking. Many surrogates are eager to talk to the press so they can assure the public they are not being exploited. The surrogates are not even allowed to speak in the same Supreme Court trial that is supposedly fighting for them.  The questionable (and ironically timed) memorandum sent by the ICMR to halt Indian Surrogacy before any laws were passed, was challenged by over 70 surrogates who stormed the gates of the ICMR, demanding to be heard. Indian surrogates have their own voices and are perfectly capable of speaking without permission of the government and the foreign press.

Apparently, the ICMR and various Indian government officials consider a woman’s ability to create life to be shameful and dirty. They compare surrogates to breeding cows and prostitutes. Clearly, they do not understand science if they think there is anything sexual about being a surrogate. The sexualisation and objectification of surrogates by the government is what demoralizes surrogates; not the act of having a baby, and certainly not the act of offering the gift of life to another. Does the ancient and rich culture of India not consider motherhood to be sacred? Why the double standard? Thank you, Ovary Police, for hijacking women’s private parts and dictating if, how and when a woman can have a baby.

After reading the proposed bill to ban surrogacy, I don’t know whether I should laugh, cry, scream or vomit. There is nothing in this proposed bill that will benefit the surrogates in any way. Nearly every item is presumptuous and theoretical babble as to whether or not a surrogate understands what is going on. I am utterly amazed at how government officials, (most of whom are men) seem to be experts on what it feels like to be pregnant, and whether or not a woman can tolerate pregnancy.

Furthermore, we could all save a lot of valuable time, effort and stress if surrogates were given the chance to speak for themselves. This ridiculous court trial, discussing the interests of surrogates, has been going on since 2012, and the surrogates are still not allowed to speak! Tell me again about how the Indian government respects women.

I’ve heard the argument that within the context of poverty, there is no such thing as choices or consent. This notion is vomitus – it does not liberate women, but rather suggests that a woman’s socio-economic background determines whether or not she is allowed to make decisions for herself. Such a philosophy oppresses women and sanctions the act of privileged people making choices that affect a woman’s fate. Additionally, Indian surrogacy clinics that operate ethically do not permit extremely impoverished women to be surrogates, making the poverty argument moot. If the critics are concerned about poverty, their time would be better spent on taking action to end extreme poverty, rather than disempowering women from taking control of their own financial destiny.

In conclusion, if you feel sorry for Indian surrogate mothers, don’t. Just stop it. They don’t need to be rescued. They are too busy changing the world for the better to listen to condescending nonsense from privileged people who underestimate them. Most people do not fully understand what surrogacy is, and therefore make gross assumptions about it. I strongly advise those of you who fit the description above to mind your own business and let Indian women choose their own destiny.

From Australia: Twin boys

What a wonderful outcome for a wonderful family...

Dear Dr. Shivani and Team,

Our twin boys Ethan and Jack were born in December, 14.  Our gratitude and appreciation for our surrogate, Dr. Shivani and SCI staff are beyond words could
describe.    We are particularly impressed with the professionalism of SCI staff and how they service intended parents, providing us with endless
assistance and information without any delay. Because of that, we felt that we were in a good hands along the way and received sufficient supports needed.

Life is a journey, thank you SCI and team took an important part in our journey and have made our dream of becoming parents come true.

From Calcutta, India : God's Gift, our beloved sons

A gentle reminder that SCI not only works with International families, but families from India. Here is a heartfelt letter from a family who, like many SCI families as a history of failed fertility treatment in their home country...

Dearest Dr. Shivani,

Finally what you have delivered for us is indescribable in words. We would like to thank you and your whole SCI team for making our dream into reality. There is no words to describe how grateful we are to you for making this happen.

We can't believe that we have finally reached here.

There  is nothing more precious than the moment we saw our two new borned God gifted sons in our eyes and the moment we take them in our arm.

We would like you to continue to be the hope for other couples seeking for parenthood.

Now  we are in the happiest moment ever and it is just started. Your faith in your compassion , your generosity of spirit have brought us to this moment in time. Words simple can't express the joy and awe we feel at having our two beloved sons Papai and Pupai to care for.

We think of you every day and pray that you may continue your amazing work helping other couples like us to become families.

You will always hold a special place in our deepest corner of hearts.

From Australia : another family completed....

Another Australian family completed; and a new generation of travellers are born ...

We would like to thank SCI for helping us become a family. Although the paperwork and processes can be daunting and frustrating, SCI guided us along the way. We are still in New Delhi finalising the paperwork.

We took the twin boys to the Taj Mahal yesterday! This was the first of many family outings that we will spend with them. We plan to give them the travel bug at an early age, so they can experience the world and all it has to offer.

A special thanks to Mariamma and her nurses for assisting us in our first few days as parents.

We look forward to getting back to Australia and to introduce the boys to their new family and friends.

From Australia: Making a family dream come true

A happy ending...

Since 2008 I made the decision to turn to surrogacy for the creation of my family.

After a miscarriage through another agency, I turned to SCI. Whilst more heartache and sorrow followed, SCI and Dr Shivani in particular, strongly indicated that my chances for success was high and not to give up hope.

Going above and beyond what a regular clinic would provide, SCI used all available means which resulted in a positive pregnancy result.

What was even more comforting was that FCI ensured my surrogate was well looked after throughout the pregnancy and monitored carefully so the risk of medical issues was minimised.

Without Dr Shivani who is an angel, SCI, Jyoti, Nabanita, Lalit, Margarida and anyone i may have missed, you have blessed me with a healthy beautiful son.

SCI is the only clinic that makes a family dream come true,

From

Gary and ( baby) Max,

Australia

Our surrogates: There is no elevator to success -one has to take the stairs

Another story about a women who took control of her life and made some informed decisions...

We are feeling very proud being able to share Anjali's story

Anjali has changed her husband and children’s life after surrogacy and is very proud to be able to have done so. Before surrogacy, Anjali's children were not going to school. Now Anjali's 6 years old daughter and 4 years old son go to school!

Anjali’s husband was working as a bus conductor; with poor opportunity for advancement and the added burden that her husband was only working person in the family. Through some of the compensation received through doing surrogacy, Anjali was able to buy a second hand car for her husband so that he can work independently.

Anjali decided to help another family with a selfless gift that no amount of compensation can ever make up for. This mindful women made a decision that changed the lives of both her family and that of a family across the globe. Anjali's children are attending school; her husband self employed and Anjali will be part of an amazing birth story, honoured forever in it's retelling.

Anjali and her family are very proud of her decision to become a surrogate.

From Australia :a beautiful baby girl

What a wonderful way to finish off the year, a wonderful family who we all had the privilege to all met  in Melbourne earlier this year...

“The afternoon knows what the morning never suspected”. (Swedish proverb)

When we wrote to you from India this time last year, we were readying ourselves for a largely unscripted year full of nervous expectation.  Now in hindsight we don't think anything could have prepared us for the rollercoaster twists and turns that 2013 threw at us.  What a ride!

Without doubt we reached the summit on 8 September at the Eden Hospital in New Delhi when our beautiful baby daughter, Indigo Gallagher-Craven, arrived on this planet.  We are incredibly grateful for the amazing courage of Nandani who grew Indigo and looked after her for 9 months; we will always be indebted.  And we must sincerely thank Dr Shivani at SCI for working her technological magic, and the generous support of her team.  Indigo certainly reminds us of the truly amazing times we are fortunate to live in.  We are indeed blessed to be able to welcome such a little treasure to our family.

So as 2013 comes to a close we want to thank you for your love, support and shared excitement on our journey to bring Indi into this crazy-fun world!

Wishing you all a very happy merry and hope your respective 2014s remind you at every corner of life’s unexpected and profound beauty.

Sean, Owen, Indigo + Eric x

We wish this family the choicest of blessings in the years to come.

From the U.S: Gorgeous boys , look how we have grown!

Another family who have written to us, to tell us of their joy on returning home, this time to the U.S

Hello Dr Shivani

Doyel and Dylan are growing fast and are healthy. We have had no health issue for either baby of any kind. In the morning when we walk by the crib, we see only big smiles and little arms trying to reach ready to be picked up for some play and love.

They both giggle loudly when played with. Doyel laughs loud and out of control, Dylan has a rolling baby laugh that is so, so cute. They hold their toys with a strong grip as they learn to control those long little arms.

To have them is the best decision of our lives.

We are so lucky or blessed to have Dylan and Doyel complete our lives.

Thank you so much,

Henry and Edith

We wish Henry and Edith and the boys the choicest of blessings. If you would like to find out more about surrogacy in India, please email us at drshivanisachdev@gmail.com

Dr. Shivani, you and your staff were wonderful and were always available to answer our questions throughout our pregnancy and also during our exit process.  We are thankful each day that we decided to try surrogacy in India.

When I sent that first email it started us on a journey that would change our lives forever.

From the U.S.A : A gorgeous baby girl...

A beautiful baby girl for a beautiful family, all safely back home in Illinois, with their family and friends.

We have always had a dream of becoming parents but never knew what we could do to realize our dreams. Then last year we heard about SCI. I said to myself that this is just too good to be true as we had been let down by adoption agencies so many times before. In December 2012 I met with Dr Shivani, after meeting with I felt a sense of calm and confidence that our dream of parenthood was about to come true!!!

Fast forward to October this year when we got the much awaited call from Dr. Shivani that our precious little daughter had arrived. We adore and cherish her every moment. She is everything and then some that we ever dreamed of.

We are eternally grateful to Dr. Shivani and her wonderful team. Her judgement and experience is just priceless. Team at SCI kept us informed every step of the way and answered every question we had. Also, we are indebted to our most generous surrogate and her family. Without her help and generosity our daughter would not be a possibility.

We will always keep her in our prayers.

Thank you all
Proud Parents

Big kids update ( USA) : Christmas Eve Boys and their sons Jag and Ajay who are three!

Many of us followed the story of the Christmas Eve boys, one of the families that i tend to think of as being a first generation families with SCI.

We all celebrated the birth of their gorgeous sons, Ajay and Jag and often wondered how they were doing. For those of you who would like to look at the back story, here is the link to the Christmas Eve boys blog : christmaseveboys.blogspot.com

I would like to thank both Terry and Steve for kindly allowing us a glimpse of their family three years on. We are so very proud to be part of both Jag and Ajay's story.

Rarely a day passes without Steve and I speaking about how blessed we are to have these two guys in our lives.  All the hard work and emotion that it took to create their lives has now been eclipsed by the immense responsibility of properly raising them.  The boys turned three on September 11th and we have gone from asking ‘when will they start talking in complete sentences?’…to asking… ‘will they ever stop talking?!?!?!’  Two chatter-boxes…non-stop chatter!  People always say ‘they grow up so quickly’.  This is true, but we have committed ourselves to treasuring every single moment so that we do not ever ask ourselves where the time has gone

.

Our life revolves around the two of them.  Both are very physically active and given their short stature (both are approximately 36” (a bit over 91cm) tall at this point), they are enjoying gymnastics.  They love books and Spongebob Squarepants.  Their favorite movie is Mulan and I am fairly certain we have seen it more than 100 times at this point…never seems to grow tiresome for them!  Jag is reserved and can sit quietly and draw or color…Ajay cannot sit still for more than 5 minutes at a time.  They have very different personalities.  Steve is Dada and I am Daddy.  I am the disciplinarian and Steve is the pushover…a serious pushover.  When I say ‘no’ they run to Steve.  Oh well, you cannot win them all!

Because their birthday falls in early September, they will not begin pre-school until next year.  The age requirement to enter school is three years on or before Sept 1.  They missed that by 10 days.  So, they will start next year, a few days before their 4th birthday.  We’ve identified the school and are in the process of completing admissions applications.  There are 21 spots available in our ‘first choice’ school and we are hoping to secure two of them.  There are some contingency plans if they aren’t accepted but we are hopeful.  Everyone tells us they will be well served by being elders in their class…good for self esteem and for learning curve.

I miss our blog and I apologize for not properly ‘signing off’ but I felt as though the public story had evolved into their private lives.  Perhaps when they are reading and writing for themselves, they will choose to pick up the story and share their lives with the on-line surrogacy community, but that will be their choice, not mine.

We miss all of you very much and are incredibly thankful this holiday season for Dr Shivani who made our dreams a reality.  What she is doing for families like ours is something so profound that words are not enough.  We all send our love and blessings and wish you a prosperous 2014!

PS.  Steve and I are legally married…Dec 3, 2011…New York City

With Love,
Terry, Steve, Jag and Ajay

We wish our American boys the choicest of blessings in the years to come. If you would like to find out more about surrogacy in India, please email us at : drshivanisachdev@gmail.com

From Ireland - a Diwali baby girl

Ireland's newest baby girl, safely home with family and friends...

We are so delighted to welcome our most beautiful precious bundle of joy, born on Diwali eve in Delhi, India.
We are so, so grateful to the whole team at SCI. We especially thank Dr. Shivani for her expert help and her sound judgement. She and the entire team from the medical to the admin staff and the nurses were so caring and professional. We would not have had our baby without our wonderful and generous surrogate mother and indeed, without the help of Dr. Shivani and the SCI team.

We are so blessed with our beautiful baby daughter, whom we cherish and adore. We would not have had her only for the wonderful generosity of our beautiful surrogate mother. We will forever be indebted to her and we will keep her in our prayers and thanks to her.

Thank you all so much

We wish this family the choicest of blessings. A Diwali baby is certainly a blessing, a reminder of the light and goodness that surrounds us.
